Rocca di Frassinello, started as a small project, connected to the development of Domini Castellare di Castellina, but eventually became big with the arrival of Domain Baron De Rothschild-Lafite, making it the first joint venture between an Italian and a French producer.
Like other Chianti estates, Castellare di Castellina, had to take into account the fact that the Chianti Classico zone, became very hard to expand: there was a lack of high quality land. The traditional and natural extension of Siena, and therefore Chianti Classico, has always been the Maremma. So for some years there had been a kind of pasture-change from the Chianti hills towards the sea. But the Maremma, has a great long-established wine growing tradition also in the north (Bolgheri and surroundings) and in the south, opposite the Argentario, with the narrow territory of Morellino di Scansano.
